Rent subsidy still too unknown

Since 1 January 2016, so, for more than a year, the Ministry of Housing has granted low-income residents of Luxembourg financial assistance of up to 300€/month, enabling them to rent decent housing.

But the annual review is unfortunate: while the Government predicted between 12,000 and 19,000 applications, only 4,000 were made and half were rejected because they did not meet the selection criteria, but were sometimes very close to the limit.

So, for 2017, the criteria will be re-examined, and a lowering of the bottom limit of income is already being talked about. Up to now, rent had to be at least 33% of the household's net income. This quota could be reduced to 30% or less, allowing more people to benefit and allowing applications that were rejected in 2016 to be accepted.

Apart from income, there are several conditions that will allow you to benefit or not from this subsidy: being an adult, living legally in Luxembourg, wishing to rent or already renting accommodation. The dwelling must/shall be used as the main dwelling. The taxpayer must ensure regular income during the 6 months preceding the application and not be already housed by a public body.

This sad assessment of 2016 reveals above all an obvious fact: the rent subsidy is still relatively unknown even though it could benefit a great number of residents.
