Young Luxembourgers leave the nest at around 27
16 октября 2025 г.
Leaving one’s parents’ home is a major step towards independence… but it’s happening later and later in Luxembourg, as in many other European countries.
According to the latest Eurostat data, young Luxembourgers leave the parental home at an average age of 26.9 years, slightly above the European average of 26 years. But this figure hides wide contrasts: Finnish youths move out as early as 21.4 on average, while Croatians tend to stay until around 31.3 years old.
While culture and family traditions certainly play a role in these choices, another factor weighs heavily: the cost of housing. Between 2015 and 2024, property prices rose by more than 60% in Luxembourg, according to Eurostat, and by over 120% in Portugal or even 200% in Hungary. Such dramatic increases make access to a first home increasingly difficult for young adults.
In Luxembourg, where the housing market remains among the tightest in Europe, buying a property is often a real challenge for young households. The rental market reflects this tension just as clearly: according to Immotop.lu data from October 2025, the average rental price has reached €29.7 per square metre, representing a +4.8% rise year-on-year. This steady upward trend confirms a real pressure on the rental segment.
In this context, young people in Luxembourg tend to approach housing with greater care and foresight. Many take time to plan their budget, compare rents, and study the market before taking the leap. A more cautious yet realistic approach in a country where every square metre truly matters.
