Introduction to the commune

Located in eastern Luxembourg, Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg, located in the Mullerthal region commonly known as Luxembourg's Little Switzerland.

Schools in Echternach

The commune has two schools, the Millermoaler Schull basic school and a classical high school. The Echternach high school is one of the only schools in the Grand Duchy to offer complete study cycles in both types of education (classical secondary education and general secondary education).The commune is also home to a music school, which is the regional center for music and dance education.

Transportation in Echternach

Echternach has a train station as well as a bus station, from which many connections can be made throughout the territory.

Heritage

As the oldest town in the country, Echternach has a rich heritage, with buildings such as the Roman Villa. The town has retained its medieval character, with its medieval wall dating back to the 10th century. In the 13th century, the wall was endowed with approximately twenty towers and doors.

5 towers have been restored and 2 have been converted into holiday homes operated by the local tourist office.The beautiful abbey, a former building for Benedictine monks, is also accessible to visitors. The program includes a tour of the enclosed spaces, the cloister and the old dining hall. On the other side, the abbey museum shows the history of the monastery and works of art such as decorative gold paintings of the first letters of the Gospel.

Culture in Echternach

The town offers many activities throughout the year. In the summer there are concerts such as the Echternach International Festival, classical music concerts in May and June, the jazz festival in September and folklore festivals.

In 2008, Echternach was awarded the title of European destination of excellence by the European Commission, and in 2010 the traditional dance procession which takes place every Tuesday during Pentecost has been added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

Sports in Echternach

Located right in the heart of nature, the town offers many hiking trails which are accessible to anyone (both young and old).For those who love being on two wheels, many moderate bike paths have been created along the Sûre; the most difficult are meant for mountain bikes, but the Bike Park is available to all.

Tourism in Echternach

The Trifolion cultural, tourist and convention center is located in the heart of the historic city center, next to the basilica and Echternach Abbey. It is made up of 3 entities within the event sector: Trifolion Culture, Trifolion Convention and Trifolion Society. Nearly 200 events are organized each year. It also houses the Echternach music school and the Musical Union.

Located next to the city, the lake is a very inviting place for a long walk or a paddle boat ride.

Ecology

The commune is part of the Climate Pact program, which is inspired by the European Energy Award. It is a system for quality management and certification within the energy policy and climate protection sectors which assesses and rewards communal involvement.
