In a Small Space, is a Round or Rectangular Table Better?

March 8, 2024

If you have a small house, maybe a studio, and so space is a problem, one of the questions you might ask yourself is whether it's better in the dining area to place a round or rectangular table. Naturally, the choice also depends on the layout of the space, for example where doors and windows are located, but also lights, appliances, or outlets and taps. Generally, a round table is preferred as it is less cumbersome. However, there are many solutions that help to utilize the available space and perspectives: here are a few.

A Round Table Aligned with the Rug

A possible solution, to be placed in the living area of a studio or a one-bedroom apartment, could be a round table: preferably positioned near the window to take advantage of the light effect, the table should be small in size and placed on a rug that is also round.

A Rectangular Table to Create Continuity

If the apartment is set up in a space with high ceilings, perhaps a loft, which is characterized by materials or elements such as wood or metal, you can opt for a wooden rectangular table, left natural without finishes, that creates a continuity of shapes and materials.

A Black Table in an Entirely White Space

If the apartment is particularly small, like in the case of a house with a mezzanine or derived from an attic, a good solution could be to choose white for everything, from the walls to the ceiling, from the floor to the furniture, to give a great sense of uniformity: in this space, a small black table can be placed to play on the contrast.

An Integrated Rectangular Table

A really space-saving idea could be to create a custom dining area in the living room, by inserting a fixed rectangular table, preferably in a neutral color, like white or light wood, against a wall, possibly equipped with drawers, useful for storing what is necessary for the table.

A Round Table in Front of a Large Arch

If the apartment has an alternation of full and empty spaces, which contribute to a sense of openness, they should be used to their best advantage: if an arch is present, the ideal is to place a round table underneath that harmonizes with the shape of the space.
